Life in New York city may have been busy and less than idealistic before the Crisis, but at least it was safe. No one needed to worry about any epidemic diseases rising and circling the local areas.
Of course, things changed. The first symptom was a bout of insanity - hallucinations, distressing "visions", aggressive behavior towards family and friends and mood swings - which quickly developed into fitting, little or no energy, and eventually a painful death. But that was nothing.
Scientists were baffled; they'd never seen anything quite like it. As sudden as the disease appeared, they were developing several vaccinations against it. Each were tested on animals, who showed no ill effects from the shot - however when used on the first humans, it only made things worse. Once diagnosed, people were isolated in the hope of preventing the disease from spreading any more. Eventually the government grew paranoid, and ordered the evacuation of New York and the surrounding areas.
Before long, the disease had gone pandemic - Europe was the next to fall prey as people desperately fled elsewhere around the globe. People left their cars, relatives and belongings behind - and most importantly, their pets.
Unaffected by the illness, the animals the humans used to own were safe in their homes. Some died, having been so dependent and loyal to their owners, however others broke free and turned feral. Dominating the stray animals on the streets were the dogs, who were unarguably faster adapting to the changes in their environments than the other creatures they once shared the city with.
Before long, dogs forgot about humans - later generations sure that they were merely a myth. They were gone off the face of the planet, after all; the only evidence of their past existence the great cities that had been left by them.
Dogs were faced with one problem, however. They traveled, forming packs and family units, and bred - soon overpopulating. Competition for land and food became fierce, and the struggle for life got ever harder...
